How to Start Collecting Pokémon Cards
Share
Pokémon cards have been around since 1996 — and right now, they're more popular than ever. Whether you're drawn in by nostalgia, pulled into the hobby by a YouTube video, or just curious after seeing a rare card sell for thousands of dollars, one question always comes first:
Where do I even start?
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to begin your Pokémon card collection the right way.
Step 1 — Know Why You're Collecting
Before you buy a single card, get clear on what kind of collector you want to be. There are two main paths:
Collecting for fun (personal enjoyment)
You're here for the love of the game, the nostalgia, or the thrill of opening packs. Budget is flexible, but you're not treating cards as investments.
Collecting with value in mind
You're paying attention to card grades, print runs, and market trends. You want to buy smart and protect your cards properly from day one.
Most collectors start in the first camp and naturally drift toward the second. Either way, this guide applies.
Step 2 — Learn the Card Types
Not all Pokémon cards are equal. Here's a quick breakdown of what you'll encounter:
- Common / Uncommon cards — The backbone of any set. Low value individually, but great for completing collections.
- Rare cards — Marked with a star (★). More desirable, but still widely available.
- Ultra Rare / Special Illustration Rare (SIR) — Full-art, alternate-art, or gold cards. These are the ones collectors chase.
- Secret Rare — Cards numbered beyond the official set count. Often the most valuable in any given set.
When buying packs, you're chasing those last two categories. But completing a full set often requires picking up commons and uncommons too.
Step 3 — Choose Your First Product
For beginners, we recommend starting with one of these:
Booster Packs
The classic entry point. Each pack contains 10 cards and one guaranteed rare. Affordable and exciting — just don't expect to pull an ultra rare every time.
Elite Trainer Box (ETB)
Contains 9 booster packs, card sleeves, dice, and other accessories. Great value and a solid all-in-one starter kit for a new collector.
Booster Bundle / Booster Display
A box of multiple packs, usually 6 or 36. Better odds at hitting something special due to volume.
Pro tip: Stick to the current standard set to start. Sets like Scarlet & Violet are widely available, actively played in tournaments, and have a healthy secondary market.
Step 4 — Protect Your Cards From Day One
A card in poor condition is worth a fraction of a card in mint condition. Start protecting your pulls immediately:
- Penny sleeves — Cheap, thin sleeves. Use as a first layer of protection right out of the pack.
- Top loaders — Rigid plastic holders for cards you want to keep safe long-term.
- Card binders — For organizing and displaying your collection.
- Grading (PSA / BGS / CGC) — If you pull something valuable, consider getting it professionally graded. A PSA 10 (gem mint) card can be worth 5–10x the raw card value.
Never leave cards loose in a box or unsleeved for long. It's a habit that's easy to start and painful to undo.
Step 5 — Learn the Market (Without Obsessing Over It)
Pokémon card prices fluctuate. Knowing the basics will help you make smarter buys:
- TCGPlayer.com — The go-to marketplace for individual card prices. Use it to check the market value of any card before buying or selling.
- eBay sold listings — Filter by "sold" to see what cards actually sell for, not just what sellers are asking.
- PriceCharting.com — Tracks sealed product prices over time. Useful for seeing whether a box is appreciating.
You don't need to become a day trader. But knowing what your cards are worth helps you appreciate what you've got — and avoid overpaying.
Step 6 — Join the Community
Collecting alone is fine. Collecting with others is better.
- Follow Pokémon content creators on YouTube and TikTok
- Join hobby Discord servers or subreddits like r/PokemonTCG
- Watch live breaks — it's a great way to experience the excitement of openings without buying full boxes
- Shop at stores (like us) that treat collectors with respect and stock current product
The community is friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to welcome new collectors.
